National Standard "Specification for Automotive Software Quality and Defect Management" Released: Automotive Software Quality Control Shifts from Post-Event Handling to Defect Prevention

The State Administration for Market Regulation (National Standardization Administration) recently approved and released the national standard "Specification for Automotive Software Quality and Defect Management" (GB/T 48140—2026). At present, "software-defined vehicles" have become a core trend in the development of the automotive industry.

The mechanism
China’s new GB/T 48140—2026 sets lifecycle quality controls across requirements, design, verification, release, upgrades and maintenance. European carmakers and automotive-software suppliers selling into China may need to map existing development and update processes to its 10 assurance activities, including safety management and historical-defect avoidance. That raises documentation and supplier-governance work now, but a common reference can reduce bilateral qualification friction if Chinese customers adopt it. This rests on the assumption that procurement and producer quality systems use the standard.
The stakes
The larger stake is whether China’s automotive-software rulebook becomes a de facto supplier-selection baseline as vehicles shift toward AI, embedded and cloud software. It matters far less if automakers treat the standard as a reference only and retain incompatible proprietary assurance frameworks.
How it reaches Europe
- China releases GB/T 48140—2026The national standard defines automotive-software quality and defect-management specifications.
- Lifecycle controls enter quality systemsThe text requires producers and suppliers to establish software quality and safety management systems.
- Suppliers document development processesThe standard covers requirements, design, validation, releases, upgrades and maintenance.
- EU automotive software suppliers face alignment workEuropean firms serving Chinese producers are exposed if customer procurement adopts the specified controls.
