The mechanism
China has released 620 foreign-language national standards in nine months, including German editions, and made 2,913 translated texts freely accessible online. EU electric-vehicle, photovoltaic and storage firms can now compare Chinese technical specifications without paying for or translating source texts. That lowers the cost of designing for Chinese requirements and of using Chinese standards in supplier discussions, assuming the relevant sectoral texts are among the published editions. It does not make those standards binding in Europe.
The stakes
If Chinese specifications become routine reference material in cross-border procurement and technical collaboration, standard-setting influence can follow export-market scale. The effect is far smaller if translated texts remain informational and European or international standards continue to govern product design and purchasing decisions.
How it reaches Europe
- China releases 620 translationsThe State Administration reports publication between January and September 2026.
- Texts become publicly accessibleThe free full-text release module has placed 2,913 translated editions online.
- Language costs for comparison fallEnglish and German editions reduce the need for European firms to translate Chinese source texts.
- EU technical teams gain reference materialEV, photovoltaic and storage firms can use relevant texts in China-facing product and supplier work, if available.
