New Mandatory National Standard for Compressed Natural Gas for Vehicles Released
新版《车用压缩天然气》强制性国家标准发布
Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation (National Standardization Administration) approved and released the mandatory national standard “Compressed Natural Gas for Vehicles” (GB 18047—2026), which will take effect on August 1, 2027. This revision of the standard aims to improve product quality, ensure safety in use, and promote fair trade.

The mechanism
From August 2027, Chinese filling stations and CNG suppliers will face a methane-number floor, disclosure of lower-quality gas and revised testing and sampling rules. European vehicle makers and fuel-system suppliers selling CNG-compatible products in China gain a more predictable fuel specification, reducing calibration and warranty risk where their designs use European-grade assumptions. They may also need China-specific compliance evidence at fuel-transfer points. The benefit depends on retail-station enforcement.
The stakes
The significance lies in partial standards convergence, which can lower adaptation costs for a niche European automotive supply chain in China. It matters far less if CNG vehicle volumes remain limited or local enforcement is uneven.
How it reaches Europe
- China releases GB 18047—2026The regulator approved a mandatory CNG-for-vehicles standard effective on August 1, 2027.
- Fuel-quality rules tightenThe standard adds a methane-number minimum, interchangeability requirements, disclosure rules and revised test methods.
- Station fuel becomes more specifiedCompliance is determined through sampling at CNG transfer points and retesting of failed results.
- European CNG suppliers face lower adaptation riskThis follows if their China-market products rely on fuel assumptions aligned with European methane-number requirements.
